Signs your yard has a drainage problem before it gets worse

Standing water and soggy patches are not just an eyesore, they are early warnings that your yard's grading or drainage needs attention.

If you notice water pooling in the same spots after every rain, that is not a coincidence. Yards around Raleigh and Cary often have clay-heavy soil that does not absorb water quickly, and when the grading around your home is off, water has nowhere to go but back toward your foundation, patio, or mulch beds. A puddle that takes more than a day to soak in is worth a closer look.

Other warning signs are easy to miss because they show up gradually. Mulch that washes out of beds during storms, grass that stays spongy days after it rains, or mosquitoes that seem worse than your neighbor's yard can all point to poor drainage. In Apex and Wake Forest, where many newer neighborhoods sit on regraded lots, we also see erosion along slopes and gaps forming near patios or retaining walls as soil shifts underneath them.

Sprinkler systems can make the problem worse if they are not adjusted for how your yard actually drains. Watering a low spot on the same schedule as the rest of the lawn keeps that area wet long after it should have dried out, which stresses the grass and invites fungus. A walk through your property after a heavy rain, checking where water sits and how long it stays, tells you more than any brochure will.

Fixing drainage usually starts with correcting the grading, adding or extending downspout lines, and sometimes building in a dry creek bed or French drain depending on the layout. It is not always a big project, but it does need to be done right the first time, since a patch job tends to move the water problem somewhere else on the property. Greenway Landscaping handles this kind of grading and drainage work for homeowners across Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest, along with the planting and hardscape work that goes along with getting a yard back to full use.
