When should you schedule fall cleanup in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest
A look at the right timing for seasonal cleanup so your lawn and beds head into winter in good shape and bounce back strong come spring.
Homeowners across Raleigh, Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest often ask us the same question this time of year: when is the right time to schedule fall cleanup. The short answer is once the bulk of leaf drop has happened but before the first hard freeze sets in. In the Triangle, that usually means mid to late November, though a warm fall can push it later and an early cold snap can move it up.
Fall cleanup is about more than raking leaves. We clear beds and lawns of debris, cut back perennials, refresh mulch beds so roots stay protected through winter, and take a look at drainage while we are on the property. Wet spots that show up after fall rains often point to grading issues or clogged drainage lines, and it is easier to address those before winter than after a freeze. This is also a good time to check that sprinkler systems are shut down properly so pipes are not sitting full of water when temperatures drop.
Waiting too long to schedule cleanup can leave wet leaves matted on the lawn, which smothers grass and invites fungus. Getting to it too early means you are back out there again a few weeks later once more leaves fall. We usually recommend one thorough cleanup visit once most trees are bare, sometimes followed by a lighter pass in early winter depending on the property and the trees around it. If your yard has a lot of hardscape, patios, walkways, retaining walls, fall is also a smart time to inspect those surfaces for shifting or settling before winter freeze and thaw cycles put more stress on them.
Curb appeal does not have to take the winter off. A clean, well kept yard heading into the cold months sets up an easier spring, with less catch up work on lawn care and planting once the weather turns. If you are not sure whether your property needs weekly maintenance through the fall or just a single cleanup visit, we are glad to take a look and talk through what makes sense for your specific yard in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, or Wake Forest.
